TUNIS: At the least 35 migrants had been killed when their boat sank off Tunisia’s southern coast and 67 others had been rescued by the coast guard, the Defense Ministry mentioned on Sunday.
The rescue operation was ongoing, the ministry mentioned in an announcement. The migrants had been of Tunisian and different nationalities.
Human traffickers more and more use Tunisia as a launch pad for migrants heading to Europe as Libya’s coast guard, aided by armed teams, has tightened controls.
Safety officers mentioned the boat was filled with about 180 migrants, together with 80 from different African nations.
Unemployed Tunisians and different Africans typically attempt to depart in makeshift boats from Tunisia to Sicily in Italy.
