The Lahore High Court on Tuesday stopped Tahirul Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) from staging a rally on Lahore’s Mall Road.

The decision came on a petition filed by the traders’ association, which had submitted that the court had itself decided that there would be no rallies on Mall Road over security concerns.

It submitted that the Qadri had announced that his party would stage a rally there and requested the court refrain him from doing so.

The court had also summoned PAT representatives to present their point of view but none of them turned up at the hearing.

A law officer told the court that currently there was Section 144 imposed on Mall Road prohibiting the staging of rallies there.

Seeking justice: PAT to stage another sit-in in Lahore on 16th

The court stopped the PAT from going ahead with the rally without submitting a response to its queries.

The Lahore administration too has restrained PAT from rallying near Istanbul Chowk on Mall Road in view of the Section 144 imposed there and asked it to stage its protest at Nasir Bagh.

On August 11, Qadri had announced that a sit-in would be staged on Mall Road on August 16 to seek justice for the families of the 14 PAT workers who were killed in the 2014 Model Town clashes  during a police crackdown at his residence in Lahore’s Model Town neighbourhood.
